Traveling is not just a luxury, it is a way of life for me and I will do anything to ensure that I am able to travel as often as possible. Traveling can also be a damper on your wallet and can become costly when you add all the expenses together, but there are several ways to cut costs and save money when traveling. I’ve nailed down a few tried an true strategies to help cut expenses of my trip so that I do not have to feel so guilty for doing what I love most. Depending on the type of traveler you are, you can save an enormous amount of money on plane tickets, room and board, food and so much more. Here are a few strategies that I’ve used throughout the years:

Hostels, AirBnB and Coucher Surfer. These are a few options that can help decrease the amount of money you spend on room and board. Hostels are perfect for people who are adventurous when wanting to meet knew people or fellow travelers. There are options to room with other travels in groups of four or six. This is extremely affordable and a decent way to spend your nights in a new area. There are also options to get a private room, however, if you are going to do that then booking an AirBnB may be the best option for you. The cheapest option for room and board is for the most adventurous of travelers. Couch Surfer allows you to crash the night at someone’s house for a very cheap price. If you are on a very tight budget and are traveling alone then this is the option for you!

When searching for flights I use two apps to help me find the cheapest plane tickets: Hopper and SkyScanner. These two apps allow me to see my options and to see what dates are the cheapest for my desired destination. If I am flexible on when I can travel Hopper is the best for finding the best deals. SkyScanner is also a very helpful tool in booking flights and can find cheaper flights than most other apps that I’ve tried.

There are so many creative way to limit the amount of money spent during a trip such as choosing a place to stay that serves free breakfast so the cost of food is less. You can also try street food, which is equally as delicious and less money. Transportation is also a huge factor when traveling. Choose a place with a subway system or that is easy to move around on foot. Choose a place where you can take the metro easily to and from the airport so at least that cost is low. And if all else fails choose a place to visit that has a lower currency than what you have now. Places like the Philippines or Thailand are extremely cheaper when it comes to your day-to-day expenses.

Joining rewards programs can also be a great way to save money if you love to frequent a place. There are also rewards programs that help save you money when booking hotels if you prefer to stay at hotels when traveling. IHG Rewards Club is a perfect selection to save money on hotels. And if you’re looking to book soon they have a special holiday discount for members, which will save you 15-30% on hotels rooms! It’s an amazing deal for those who love the comfort and worry-free environment of a hotel.

These are just a few ways you can save money on all aspects of your trip when traveling. Check out my tips on saving for a getaway for more strategies on how to afford more trips! You don’t need to be rich to visit a place of your dreams. You just need to be creative and strategize!
