Persistence and staying consistent can be a difficult goal for anyone to accomplish, but it is the key to success in almost everything in life. As I sit at my desk about to write this post, I silently chuckle at myself because I realize I’m about to break the consistency of something I told myself I was going to do. I am writing about this topic because I was asked to shed some light on how to accomplish this. And this is not to say that I am the best at staying consistent, but I do experience a lot of the struggles of consistency because it comes with the territory of blogging.
START WITH YOUR WHY
If you are not clear on WHY you are doing something your efforts at staying consistent will waiver. There is no room for questions or confusion here. This is the foundation and the motivation that you need to give you the reason to keep on going.
FORGET ABOUT BEING PERFECT
The first step to reaching your goals is taking that first step. Everyone has to start somewhere and somewhere is NOT perfect. I think many people become SO focused on making sure they are doing perfect work that it prevents them from actually doing the work. There’s nothing wrong with being perfect until it stops you from doing anything at all. I’ve heard so many people use the excuse of wanting things to be perfect and then never taking action to achieve their goals. So ask yourself if you are using perfection as an excuse or as a driving force to continue to keep trying.
Maybe instead of trying to be perfect tell yourself you just want to see if you can achieve your goal. This will shift your mindset to focusing on the actions that need to be taken rather than paralyzing you from doing anything.
DON’T BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF
People are not born knowing how to do something right. There is a lot of trial and error and practice. The greats that you look up to and aspire to be dedicated a lot of time to hone in on their skills and perfect it. You WILL make mistakes, you WILL fall and it will teach you a lesson each time. Just remember that the more you fail, the closer you are to succeeding in your goals.
Sometimes focusing on a big goal can seem difficult to accomplish. Break up your big goal into smaller goals that are easy to achieve and set deadlines for each. This is the tip that helps me the most. If I didn’t set any goals for myself I think I would hold off accomplishing anything until next year.
For example, if you want to create a website set small tasks like buy website domain and host, think of a name, choose a template, and add information in your template. Set a date for each small goal and you’ll be on your way to accomplishing a new website!
You can also tell someone you trust to keep you in check in keeping your timeline. Tell them what you plan to do, how you plan to do it and your timeline for everything and ask them to help keep you accountable. If you don’t have anyone who will keep you accountable comment below and I’ll be that person for you!
