My wanderlust heart has been aching for somewhere to go.
There are so many reasons why I love traveling and why I think it’s important to keep traveling, especially in our 20s. I have been blessed to travel and I hope it never stops, but the 20s is a time that I think should be enjoyed and it should be well-traveled.
1. TRAVELING HELPS YOU FIND YOURSELF
Our twenties are a time when we are still figuring it out- our careers, our relationships, our purpose and meaning in this world- and traveling can help us find our answers. I am a firm believer that when you put yourself in a new environment, you expose yourself to different perspectives, and often times, different cultures which can open your mind to new ways of doing and seeing things. You become a more well-rounded and cultured person by traveling.
2. TRAVELING ENCOURAGES YOU TO TRY NEW THINGS
When you’re traveling you’re more apt to try new things such as food or activities. The more you learn to put yourself outside your comfort zone the more you develop your sense of self. Maybe you’ll show yourself you can succeed in something you thought you could or would never do, such as, cliff diving. Or maybe you surprise yourself and realize you actually like something that you never thought you would like, such as, an unexpected exotic dish. I’ve faced my fears and jumped off 50-foot cliffs into a body of water, I’ve tried interesting dishes that include tongue and intestines and I’ve spontaneously trekked to the outskirts of a city to a secluded tropical adventure using only public transportation for the first time.
There have been so many instances of first time experiences abroad and I have never regretted it.
3. YOU CAN LEARN A LOT BY LOOKING AT YOUR ENVIRONMENT
You can learn a lot about life if you stop and look around. I learned the friendly nature and hospitality of the Filipino people. I learned the traditions and rules of the Japanese. I was able to learn so much about history from visiting Europe and it’s wondrous monuments and museums. There is so much beauty in this world and the people that live in it. Take this time to enjoy it. Soak it in and learn from your environment.
Even if you can’t travel far away go somewhere new.
I went hiking this weekend with a group of people I have never met before and they turned out to be the most positive group of people I’ve ever met. They truly all had beautiful spirits. Just immersing myself in a new environment with new people uplifted my spirits so much and reminded me that there is so much good in this world. All you have to do is look around.
Travel to not escape life, but for life to not escape you.
