Packing for any trip can be difficult especially if you’ve never been there before. Airline restrictions on how much you are allowed to bring can also cause a bit of anxiety when packing. You might ask yourself how many pairs of pants should I bring? How many shoes? Should I bother taking liquids? It’s hard to decide how much is too much and how little is too little. I understand your pain. I also know the desire to look cute on your trip and the frustration when all your cute outfits won’t fit into that darn luggage! For all your frustrations on how much to bring I’ve created a guideline to help you with your packing needs.
1. STRATEGIZE AND PLAN
• Bring extra – Extra underwear, extra socks, and a nice outfit just in case!
• Bring outfits that go from day to night easily or you can also plan them around your activities if you already know what you’re doing.
• Figure out how many items to bring according to the number of days you will stay at your destination. I’ve broken it down per item.
# of days total: (# of Days divided by 2) = # of bottoms to bring (always round down for odd # days)
Ex: (7 days divided by 2)= 3.5= 3 bottoms
• if you must bring another bottom I suggest bringing something that takes up less room like a pair of shorts or a skirt this will be the “.5”
Here’s why: Any type of bottom are used more as staples in your wardrobe. They can be used more than one with a switch of your top and a few accessories it can be a completely different outfit!
Here’s why: tops like t-shirts and blouses are made of thinner material. They’re easy to roll up and tuck away into your luggage without taking a lot of room. The tops can create the difference in your outfits too.
1-2 for the whole trip
Here’s why: Outerwear takes up a lot of space. I like to choose a couple jackets or coats that will go with everything. You don’t need more than that!
2-3 pairs of shoes per week
Ex: 2 weeks = 4-6 pairs of shoes
(I’d bring 4 pairs of shoes if possible. Less is more!)
Here’s why: The same shoes can be used for a number of different outfits. Choose shoes that are versatile, comfy and will go with most of your wardrobe. Bring sandals to save more space, wear your most clunky shoes to the airport if possible, and always bring one pair of nice shoes in case you go out or attend a more formal function.
You can bring 3-7 accessories for your whole trip!
Here’s why: It’s easier to bring small accessories to create variety in your wardrobe. Items like jewelry, scarves and belts are lightweight and won’t take up a lot of room. I highly recommend bringing a few in case you have a last minute party to attend or have run out of clothing options and need to create a “new outfit” out of the blue.
These are just a few guidelines that I found myself using. In the end it’s your judgement call. Have fun with it! Comment below and let me know if you have any go to packing tips! Also, let me know what you would like to see in the future!
