I had the opportunity early this year to stay in the Philippines for about a month. I came back a different person, having learned a lot about a different culture and having learned more about myself. This was probably my 15th visit to the beautiful country and there is still more to see. I cannot wait to visit again!
Even though I have been to the Philippines several times, I still have not seen it in its entirety. There are about 7,107 islands that make up the Philippines, which is a lot of ground to cover. If you ever visit a country like this I suggest sticking to a couple different areas so you can really spend your time in that place. It’s much easier to take in the scenery and culture when you’re not in a rush to see EVERYTHING.
Every time I visit the Philippines I am surprised at what I find and whom I meet. The people are always friendly and treat you like family. The food is exquisite with eternally fresh ingredients and delicately, sweet fruits and there is always, ALWAYS an adventure waiting for me to go along with it.
Today, I will take you along with me on a weekend away from the big city to the beaches of La Union. It is about a 4-6 hour drive away from the traffic and congestion of Manila. The trip may seem long, but it is worth it!

Leave the city and drive towards La Union!
Head straight from your hotel, motel or hostel to Flotsam Jetsam Hostel for some dinner and drinks while you sit outside on bean bag chairs and enjoy the night sky and beach view.
Turn in because the next day is going to be a long and exciting one!

Breakfast! And what’s breakfast without a nice a cup of coffee or tea? I suggest going to El Union Coffee where the barista’s will surprise your taste buds with handmade horchata lattes and earl grey sweetened iced tea. (They also have amazing grilled cheese sandwiches if you want to stop by later for a snack.)
Head over to Tangadan Falls for a nice long hike right after an early breakfast. Make sure to bring some sunscreen and a bathing suit in case you want to take a dip in the beautiful river or hide under the waterfalls.
After your hike you can grab some lunch along San Gabriel. The inihaw (meaning grilled food like shrimp or pork) is to die for!
Take surfing lessons at the San Juan Hotel’s beachfront or lounge around and relax on the sand.
Meet back at Flotsam Jetsam Hostel where an outdoor movie will be playing, locals and visitors will be mingling and the ambience will be just right. Drink, eat, make friends with the hostel’s dog or play some music with strangers. Whatever it is, the night will be well spent here.

Grab some coffee and breakfast at El Union Coffee then rush back to Manila and make it in time for your flight back home!
This is only an example of a little more than a day in La Union because that’s all I had there before I went back to the States. However, I suggest spending a weekend there if you have the time. It will be worth it. La Union is the perfect blend of fun and relaxation!
Until next time…
